Boxwood Cinemas- Linking Nollywood and Naija Tourism

Post 177 of 232

“It is hard to avoid Nigerian films in Africa.
Public buses show them, as do many restaurants and hotels”
– The Economist.

Nigerian films are as popular abroad as they are at home. Millions of people watch Nigerian films every day and yet we all have mixed feelings about the industry.

Unlike location based tourism, the Nigeria movie industry has a potent advantage of advertising and entertaining Nigerians and non Nigerians home and abroad.

Just as the western media used a similar tool to propagate their agenda, Nollywood (with careful planning) has the potential to achieve a similar feat i.e. export Nigeria in the positive.

Like all exported commodity, the gains, employment and other positive multiplying effect is colossal.

No doubt the industry has come a long way from the days of ‘village headmaster’, Ìkébè super’ and the epic series of Fádèyí olóró and Abìjà wàrà bí Ekùn’ but there is still a long way to go.

Challenges such as power, transportation and funding are a few of the formidable enemy facing producers of today.

In recent times better attempts have been made to develop the industry. The unwavering creed of excellence preached and evinced in the works of producers such as Tunde Kelani of mainframe movies and Tade Ogidan indicates the beginning of how our movies can get.

Another formidable enemy of the industry is piracy and distribution, hundreds or perhaps thousands of online channels exist where the movies are broadcast free with no return to the producers of such movies; This is a cancer that threatens to destroy the industry if credible effort is not made by the government to fight back. After all, roducers and actors can only be encouraged to produce something better if they get good returns.

What do you think, are the greatest challenges facing Naija movies?
