I guess my undying fixation with Nigerians is driving some of my friends up the wall in exasperation! They can’t blame me because it is a passion of mine and anyway, Naijas are great people despite the one or two bad “elements” in their midst but which country including my own doesn’t have any?
Another Tuesday and today I’m not talking about food but the fashion sense of the Nigerian people and especially the sistas.

It is only in Naija that a typical African woman will get away in wearing a rather close fitting outfit and not have to worry about the “extras” showing…the sistas know what I’m talking about. It is only in Naija that the women are courageous enough to combine colors, textures and certainly get away from getting caught up in the fashion rut.
Nigerian women are glamorous, stylish & inventive. Their fashion sense is out of this world – love them or hate them – they certainly look dynamic and trendy and they don’t apologize for it! A Naija woman will easily change from a Western look into a more tradition look of Buba and Iro topping it off with a Gele or simply a Kaba and still look drop-dead gorgeous. They love to accessorize and I just love the way they match the shoe and handbag (Kenyan ladies need to learn a thing or two from our Naija sistas and no offense) and one thing I’ve noted is that it doesn’t have to match the particular outfit – that really dazzles me!
So where did my love for Ankara begin?

From watching Nollywood movies starring one of my favorite stars: Kate Henshaw Nuttal (I almost have her cell number on speed dial – lol – if you believe that you will believe anything but honestly I just love the girl). Kate’s obvious love of Ankara fabric made a lasting impression on me. She definitely has a stunning mix and designs for these fabrics and she sure looks good, no, gorgeous in them too! I love the one she will go from the bold colors to the more gentle tones with very fashionable styles that beg you to ask for more. I love the laces and jacquard too but I’m more at home with the Ankara – it is more African and so very comfortable to wear – not forgetting pocket friendly – that’s my opinion ooh, so please don’t quote me as the expert.
I will tell you for sure, with some African countries like Kenya that didn’t have a national dress (until quite recently and we are still trying to adapt to it), Nigerian Kitenge (as it is commonly known in East Africa) and styles will continue to be our favorite dress style.

On a final note, the afro-centric influence of the Nigerian fashion makes me so proud to be African!
